Croydon
Croydon lies at the northern edge of the north downs, a chalk hill range that is claimed to be the origin of the name (from the old french 'croie dune' meaning chalk hill). Croydon boast an impressive skyline but has its earliest mention in documents dating back to 962. In the 18th cenruty Croyden was a significant halt for coaches travelling to Brighton but modern town is a popular shopping desination. The London Borough of Croydon includes Norwood and Streatham.
